Getting around Okinawa
Okinawa is the one part of Japan where the train network will not carry you. Naha has the Yui Rail monorail, which is useful for the airport, Kokusai-dori and Shuri, and that is essentially the extent of rail on the main island. Everything north of the capital — including the aquarium, the better beaches and the Kouri and Yagaji bridges — assumes a car. Buses exist and are cheap but slow and infrequent. Driving times are the thing visitors most often underestimate: the north of the island is considerably further from Naha than the map suggests, and the expressway only covers part of the route. Book rental cars early in summer and around Japanese holidays.
Choosing between the islands
The main island suits a first visit because it combines the aquarium, historical sites and beaches without a second journey. The Kerama islands are reachable by ferry from Naha as a day trip and have noticeably clearer water, which is why they attract divers and snorkellers. Miyako and Ishigaki are separate flights and a different trip altogether, with the Yaeyama group beyond Ishigaki reached by inter-island ferry. Ferry services are weather-dependent and cancel in rough conditions, so building a tight schedule around one is risky. If your priority is water clarity rather than convenience, the outer islands are worth the extra leg.
When to go and what the weather does
Okinawa is subtropical and runs on a different calendar from the mainland. The rainy season typically starts and finishes earlier, roughly through May into June. Typhoon risk runs from summer into autumn and can close ferries and flights at short notice, which is the main reason to build slack into an Okinawa itinerary. Swimming season is far longer than on the mainland, and many beach facilities operate from around spring into autumn. Winter is mild rather than warm, too cool for most people to swim but pleasant for walking and diving with a wetsuit, and prices are at their lowest. Note that Shuri Castle suffered a major fire in 2019 and reconstruction has been under way since, so check what is currently open.
