The Otaru Blue Cave no longer goes inside the cave
The one item on this page that will actively spoil a booking if you miss it. After a rockfall in July 2025, operators at Otaru suspended entry into the Blue Cave on safety grounds, and the boats now circle the outside instead of going in. The local tourism association posted the notice at the time and the day-trip listings reflect it.
The trip still runs and the coast is still worth seeing. But if the photograph you have in mind is the one taken from inside the cave, that is not currently what you are buying (as of August 2026). Check the operator’s own notice before booking, because this is the kind of restriction that gets lifted without much announcement.
These are short rides, not voyages
Most of what is sold as a “cruise” here is a 45-to-80-minute loop. The Osaka bay galleon runs about three quarters of an hour, a little longer for the twilight sailing. The Dotonbori river boat cycles roughly every half hour. The Fushimi canal boat is around fifty minutes including its stop at the sluice museum. Otaru’s Blue Cave round trip is about eighty minutes on the water, though the day trip from Sapporo wrapped around it is a full day.
The exceptions are the Tokyo Bay boats — a tea-time sailing is an afternoon, and an evening yakatabune with a meal is the evening. Plan those as the event, not as a gap-filler.
Season and weather decide more than the operator does
The Fushimi canal boat is the seasonal one. It runs most of the year but stops from around mid-December to mid-March while river works are carried out on the Yodo. Its cherry-blossom sailings in late March and early April are the busiest window of its year and seats are limited — that is the one on this page to book early.
Covered versus open decides your rainy day. The Dotonbori river boats are covered and keep sailing in light rain. The open-decked bay galleon can suspend for weather or sea state. Neither guarantees a sailing, but if the forecast is poor and you want to keep the plan, the river boat is the safer booking.
Two Osaka boats, two different days
People book the wrong one because both are “an Osaka cruise”.
The river loop runs through the middle of the city past the illuminated signs and turns at Minatomachi. It belongs to a Dotonbori afternoon or evening and it is covered.
The bay galleon is a replica sailing ship crossing open water past the aquarium, Universal Studios and the harbour bridges. It belongs to a Tempozan or aquarium day, and it is exposed to the weather.
They are not substitutes for one another. Pick the one that matches the rest of your day.
