Getting There
From Kansai International Airport (KIX)
Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 directly to Kintetsu-Nara Station or JR Nara Station in approximately 85–90 minutes. This is the most convenient option for travelers with luggage as it requires no transfers. Budget: Take the JR Kansai Airport Rapid 🔵 to Tennoji Station, then transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 to JR Nara Station (approximately 90 minutes). Premium: Take the JR Haruka Limited Express to Tennoji, then transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 for a faster but more expensive journey.
From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)
Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus directly to Kintetsu-Nara Station or JR Nara Station in approximately 60 minutes. Train connections from Itami involve multiple transfers (Monorail, Hankyu, Subway, Kintetsu) and are generally less convenient for reaching Nara directly.
From Major Stations
- From Kyoto Station: Take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line (red/orange) to Kintetsu-Nara Station (approximately 35–50 minutes). Alternatively, JR Pass holders can take the JR Nara Line 🟤 to JR Nara Station (approximately 45–60 minutes).
- From Osaka-Namba Station: Take the Kintetsu Nara Line (red/orange) Rapid Express directly to Kintetsu-Nara Station (approximately 40 minutes).
- From Osaka Station (Umeda): Take the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 Yamatoji Rapid directly to JR Nara Station (approximately 50 minutes).
Local Access
Todai-ji Temple is located within Nara Park. The nearest rail hub is Kintetsu-Nara Station. From there, it is approximately a 20-minute walk through the park to the temple, or a short ride on the local Nara Kotsu Bus (yellow). From JR Nara Station, the walk is approximately 45 minutes, so taking a bus (Loop Line #2) is recommended. IC cards such as ICOCA (as well as Suica and PASMO) are accepted on all trains and local buses.
