Getting There

Starting Point: Reaching Nikko

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Tobu Limited Express (Spacia X or Revaty) from Asakusa Station directly to Tobu-Nikko Station in approximately 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours. This is the most comfortable direct route. Premium: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to Utsunomiya Station, then transfer to the JR Nikko Line to reach JR Nikko Station. This takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes total. Direct from Shinjuku: The JR/Tobu Limited Express “Nikko” or “Kinugawa” runs directly from Shinjuku Station to Tobu-Nikko in approximately 2 hours.

From Narita Airport (NRT)

Recommended (Premium): Take the 🔵 Keisei Skyliner from Terminal 1 or 2 to Keisei-Ueno Station in approximately 45 minutes. From there, it is a short walk or taxi ride to Tobu-Asakusa Station to begin the journey. Mid-range: The 🟠 Keisei Access Express connects directly to Asakusa Station (via the 🩷 Toei Asakusa Line) in approximately 60–70 minutes. Terminal 3 users must take the shuttle to Terminal 2 first.

From Haneda Airport (HND)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the 🔴 Keikyu Line from any terminal (T1, T2, T3). Look for trains offering through-service to the 🩷 Toei Asakusa Line. This takes you directly to Asakusa Station in approximately 35–45 minutes, where you can transfer to the Tobu line for Nikko without navigating complex major stations like Tokyo or Shinjuku.

Useful Passes

For this itinerary, the Nikko Pass (World Heritage Area or All Area) offered by Tobu Railway is highly recommended. It covers the round-trip base fare from Asakusa (Limited Express surcharge is extra) and unlimited bus rides within specific zones in Nikko. Holders of the Japan Rail Pass or JR Tokyo Wide Pass should utilize the Shinkansen route via Utsunomiya or the direct JR/Tobu Limited Express from Shinjuku. IC cards (Suica, PASMO) are accepted on all trains and most buses in the Nikko area.
