Tennoji is a diverse area in southern Osaka featuring Japans tallest building, one of its oldest temples, and a popular zoo. Less touristy than Namba but offers unique attractions.

Abeno Harukas

Japans tallest building at 300m. Observation deck Harukas 300 offers panoramic views. Art museum on 16th floor. Connected to department store and station.

Shitennoji Temple

One of Japans oldest temples (593 AD). Five-story pagoda. Monthly flea markets on 21st and 22nd. Free grounds, paid entry to inner areas.

Tennoji Zoo

One of Japans oldest zoos with 1,000 animals. Good for families. Adjacent to park and Shinsekai.

Tips

  • Combine with: Shinsekai is walking distance south.
  • Harukas timing: Sunset and night views are spectacular.

Getting There

From Kansai International Airport (KIX)

Recommended (Premium): Take the 🔵 JR Haruka Limited Express from Terminal 1 directly to Tennoji Station in approximately 35 minutes. This is the fastest option. Budget: The JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service serves Terminal 1 and reaches Tennoji in approximately 50–60 minutes for a lower fare. Passengers arriving at Terminal 2 must take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 to access the train station.

From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus directly to Tennoji Station (Abeno Harukas) in approximately 30–40 minutes. This avoids complex transfers with luggage. Budget: Take the Osaka Monorail to Senri-Chuo, then transfer to the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line to Tennoji in approximately 60 minutes.

From Major Stations

  • From Shin-Osaka Station: Take the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line directly to Tennoji Station (approximately 20–25 minutes). This is the most convenient route for Shinkansen arrivals.
  • From Osaka Station (Umeda): Take the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line or the JR Osaka Loop Line directly to Tennoji (approximately 15–20 minutes).
  • From Namba Station: Take the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line south to Tennoji (approximately 6 minutes).

Local Access

Tennoji Station is a major transportation hub in southern Osaka. It is served by the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, the Tanimachi Line, and multiple JR West lines (including the Loop Line and Hanwa Line). Across the street, Osaka-Abenobashi Station serves the 🔴 Kintetsu Line (Minami-Osaka Line). The ICOCA card is the standard IC card for the Kansai region, though Suica and PASMO are also accepted on all trains and buses.
