Overview

Nara Park is home to over 1,000 free-roaming deer considered sacred messengers. The large park contains several of Naras major temples and shrines including the famous Todai-ji.
The Deer
Feeding the Deer
Deer crackers (shika senbei) sold for ¥200 at vendors throughout the park. The deer know to bow for food. Be prepared – they can be persistent once they know you have snacks.

Deer Behavior
Generally friendly but can bite or headbutt for food. Keep food hidden until ready. Some deer near Todai-ji are larger and more aggressive.

Key Sites in the Park
Todai-ji – Giant Buddha. Kasuga Taisha – Stone lantern-lined path. Kofuku-ji – Five-story pagoda. Nara National Museum – Buddhist art collection.

Tips
- Maps: Deer may try to eat paper maps and brochures.
- Morning: Fewer crowds, deer are calmer.

From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)

- From Kyoto Station: Take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line (Express or Limited Express – orange/maroon) to Kintetsu Nara Station (approximately 35–45 minutes). Alternatively, the JR Nara Line (Miyakoji Rapid – brown) connects to JR Nara Station in approximately 45 minutes.
Local Access
Kintetsu Nara Station is the closest hub, located approximately a 5–10 minute walk from the park entrance and the main deer gathering spots.
