Getting There
Starting Point
This itinerary is best started from Kintetsu-Nara Station, which is located closer to Nara Park and the main temples than JR Nara Station. From Osaka-Namba: Take the Kintetsu Nara Line (Red/Orange) Rapid Express directly to Kintetsu-Nara in approximately 35–40 minutes. From Kyoto Station: Take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line (Red/Orange) Limited Express or Express to Kintetsu-Nara in approximately 35–45 minutes. If utilizing a Japan Rail Pass, take the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 from Osaka or the JR Nara Line 🟤 from Kyoto to JR Nara Station, then walk approximately 15–20 minutes to reach the itinerary starting area.
From Kansai International Airport (KIX)
Recommended (Premium): Take the Airport Limousine Bus from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 directly to Kintetsu-Nara Station or JR Nara Station in approximately 85–90 minutes. This is the most convenient option for travelers with luggage as it requires no transfers. Mid-range: Take the JR Haruka Limited Express (White/Blue) to Tennoji Station, then transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 to Nara in approximately 80–90 minutes total. Budget: Take the Nankai Airport Express 🔵 to Namba Station, walk to Kintetsu-Namba Station, and transfer to the Kintetsu Nara Line (Red/Orange) to Nara.
Useful Passes
For travelers based in Osaka or Kyoto, the Kintetsu Rail Pass (1 Day or 2 Day) covers the round-trip train fare and offers unlimited rides on the Kintetsu network. The Kansai Thru Pass is also valid on Kintetsu lines and local Nara Kotsu buses. Travelers using the Japan Rail Pass should stick to JR lines. For single rides without a pass, the ICOCA IC card is accepted on all trains and buses throughout the Kansai region.
