Best Autumn Spots

Tofuku-ji Temple

Most famous autumn spot. The Tsutenkyo Bridge offers stunning valley views of red maples. Arrive at opening time (8:30am).

Eikan-do Temple

Beautiful night illuminations. Day and night visits both recommended. Known as the “temple of autumn leaves.”

Kiyomizu-dera

Getting There

Arriving in Kyoto

From Kansai International Airport (KIX): Recommended (Mid-range/Premium): Take the 🔵 JR Haruka Limited Express directly to Kyoto Station in approximately 75–80 minutes. The train station is connected to Terminal 1; passengers arriving at Terminal 2 (LCCs) must take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 first. Budget: Airport Limousine Buses serve Kyoto Station directly but may face traffic delays.

From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM): Recommended (Mid-range): The Airport Limousine Bus is the most convenient option, reaching Kyoto Station in approximately 50–55 minutes. Alternatively, a combination of the Osaka Monorail and 🟤 Hankyu Line takes approximately 60–70 minutes.

From Tokyo or Osaka: The Tokaido Shinkansen stops directly at Kyoto Station. From Osaka Station (Umeda), the JR Special Rapid Service reaches Kyoto in approximately 30 minutes.

Getting Around During Autumn

Kyoto’s roads become extremely congested during the fall foliage season. City buses often experience significant delays and overcrowding.

Recommended Strategy: Prioritize trains and subways to reach the general vicinity of foliage spots, then walk. The ICOCA card (compatible with Suica and PASMO) is essential for seamless transfers between different rail companies.

  • For Eastern Kyoto (Tofukuji, Gion, Kiyomizu-dera): Use the 🟢 Keihan Line, which runs parallel to the Kamo River and avoids city traffic.
  • For Arashiyama: Take the 🟤 Hankyu Line to Arashiyama Station or the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station.
  • For Central Kyoto: Utilize the Kyoto Municipal Subway (Karasuma and Tozai lines) to navigate the city center efficiently.
