Overview

Kenroku-en is one of Japans Three Great Gardens, along with Okayama Koraku-en and Mito Kairaku-en. The name means “Garden of Six Attributes” representing spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, water, and views.

Highlights

Kotoji-toro Lantern

Two-legged stone lantern that is the symbol of Kanazawa. Most photographed spot in the garden, overlooking Kasumigaike Pond.

Seasonal Beauty

Spring: Cherry blossoms (early April). Summer: Iris flowers. Autumn: Maple colors (mid-November). Winter: Yukitsuri rope structures protecting trees from snow.

Seisonkaku Villa

Adjacent samurai lords retirement villa. Separate admission. Beautiful interiors.

Tips

• Free entry: Early morning (before 8am) some seasons.
• Combine with: Kanazawa Castle Park is adjacent (free).
• Time: 1 hour minimum, 2 hours to fully appreciate.

Getting There

From Komatsu Airport (KMQ)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus from the arrival terminal directly to Kanazawa Station (West Exit) in approximately 40–50 minutes. This is the most direct route as Komatsu is the closest airport to the city. Budget: Local buses connect to Komatsu Station, where you can take a JR local train to Kanazawa, but this requires a transfer and takes longer.

From Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO)

Recommended (Premium): Take the Meitetsu μ-SKY (Blue/White) to Nagoya Station in approximately 30 minutes. From Nagoya, take the JR Limited Express Shirasagi to Tsuruga, then transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen to reach Kanazawa Station. The total journey takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. Budget: Highway buses operate between Nagoya and Kanazawa, taking approximately 4 hours.

From Major Stations

• From Tokyo Station: Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Blue/Copper) “Kagayaki” or “Hakutaka” directly to Kanazawa Station in approximately 2.5 hours. This is the fastest option.
• From Osaka/Kyoto Stations: Take the JR Limited Express Thunderbird to Tsuruga Station, then transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa. The total trip takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Local Access

Kenroku-en is located approximately 2.5 kilometers from Kanazawa Station. From the East Exit bus terminal (stops 3, 6, or 7), take the Kanazawa Loop Bus (Right Loop/Orange or Left Loop/Green) or the Kenrokuen Shuttle 🟤 to the “Kenrokuen-shita / Kanazawa Castle” stop. The bus ride takes approximately 15–20 minutes. While West Japan JR Buses accept nationwide IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA), some local private buses may require cash, so carrying small change is recommended.

Kenroku-en Garden is approximately a 15-20 minute bus ride from Kanazawa Station using the Kanazawa Loop Bus or Kenrokuen Shuttle. Alight at the Kenrokuen-shita bus stop. It is also approximately a 10-minute taxi ride from Kanazawa Station. ICOCA and Suica IC cards are accepted on the Kanazawa Loop Bus and Kenrokuen Shuttle.
