Most visitors to Japan pass through Chiba without registering it, because Narita Airport and Tokyo Disney Resort are both here and both are usually thought of as belonging to Tokyo. The prefecture is considerably more than its two famous addresses. It occupies the Boso Peninsula east of the capital, which means a long Pacific coastline with the country’s most consistent surf, a mild climate that keeps flowers in bloom when the mountains are under snow, and a set of large family attractions — farms, aquariums, theme parks — of a scale that is difficult to fit inside Tokyo itself. For anyone travelling with children, or with a spare day either side of a Narita flight, it repays a look.

Family attractions
Chiba’s strength is space, and the attractions here use it. Mother Farm, in the hills near Futtsu, is a working farm turned day-out with sheep shows, animal feeding and seasonal flower fields across a large hillside site. Kamogawa Sea World on the Pacific coast is among the few aquariums in Japan keeping orcas, and its shows are the main draw. Tokyo German Village, despite the name, is a flower park and illumination site in Sodegaura.
Outdoors, Nokogiriyama offers a ropeway, a cliff-edge lookout known as the hell-peek, and a very large stone Buddha carved into the hillside. The Boso coast has calm swimming beaches on the west side facing Tokyo Bay and surf beaches facing the Pacific on the east. Individual parks set their own closing days and seasonal hours, so check each official site before making the trip.
Tokyo Disney & experiences
Tokyo Disney Resort is in Urayasu, at the western edge of Chiba, roughly fifteen minutes by train from Tokyo Station. It comprises two parks — a classic-format Disneyland and DisneySea, which is unique to Japan and built around a series of nautical harbours — plus resort hotels and a monorail linking them. DisneySea is generally the one visitors from abroad are advised not to miss, and its newer fantasy area has increased demand further.
Tickets are date-specific and sold in advance through the official channels, with entry numbers managed by demand; buying on the day at the gate is not reliable. The parks use a paid priority-access system alongside free standby queues, and the app is close to essential for managing either. Peak periods include Japanese school holidays, Golden Week in early May, and the run-up to New Year. Check current ticketing rules on the official site, as they have changed repeatedly.

Narita Airport sits in the middle of the prefecture, and if you have a long layover the temple town of Naritasan Shinshoji is around ten minutes from the airport by train — a genuine thousand-year-old temple complex with a pilgrim street of eel restaurants leading up to it, and one of the better ways to spend four spare hours in Japan.
Getting around Chiba is easiest by car once you leave the Tokyo Bay corridor; rail lines run along the coasts but connections across the peninsula are slow. The climate is mild year-round, and the peninsula’s flower fields around Minamiboso typically bloom from midwinter into early spring, well ahead of the rest of Honshu. Local produce includes peanuts, which are a genuine regional speciality rather than a souvenir gimmick, along with sushi-grade fish landed at Choshi.
