Overview
Hokkaido’s rail network is less dense than Honshu but covers vast distances through stunning scenery. JR Hokkaido operates all major lines, making the JR Pass extremely valuable here. Trains are less frequent than in Tokyo/Osaka, so check schedules in advance.
IC Cards
Kitaca (flying squirrel logo) is the local IC card from JR Hokkaido. Your Suica, PASMO, or ICOCA from other regions works on all Hokkaido trains and buses.
New Chitose Airport (CTS)
The main gateway to Hokkaido, located near Sapporo.
🟢 JR Rapid Airport
Recommended: Direct trains to Sapporo Station in approximately 35-40 minutes. Runs every 15 minutes during peak hours. No reservation needed. JR Pass valid.
To Other Cities
- Otaru: JR Rapid Airport continues to Otaru (~75 min from airport)
- Niseko: No direct train. Take JR to Kutchan Station (~2.5 hours) or bus
- Hakodate: Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (~4 hours total with transfers)
JR Hokkaido Lines
🟢 Hakodate Main Line
Connects Sapporo → Otaru → Niseko area → Hakodate direction. Scenic coastal views between Sapporo and Otaru. The section to Niseko requires transfer at Otaru.
🔵 Chitose Line
Airport access line. New Chitose Airport → Sapporo → Otaru. The Rapid Airport runs on this line.
🟠 Sekisho Line / Muroran Main Line
Connects Sapporo to Noboribetsu Onsen area and Hakodate via the southern route. Limited express trains available.
Limited Express Trains
- Super Hokuto / Hokuto — Sapporo ↔ Hakodate (~3.5-4 hours). Scenic route along the coast.
- Kamui / Lilac — Sapporo ↔ Asahikawa (~1.5 hours). Access to Biei and Furano area.
- Okhotsk — Sapporo ↔ Abashiri (~5.5 hours). Winter drift ice viewing.
- Super Ozora — Sapporo ↔ Kushiro (~4 hours). Eastern Hokkaido access.
Hokkaido Shinkansen
Connects Honshu to Hokkaido via the Seikan Tunnel under the Tsugaru Strait.
🟢 Hayabusa
Tokyo → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in approximately 4 hours. Green stripe livery. JR Pass valid. Currently the fastest way from Tokyo to Hokkaido.
Note: The Shinkansen terminates at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, not Hakodate city. Take the Hakodate Liner shuttle train (~20 min) to Hakodate Station.
Future: Extension to Sapporo is planned for 2030s.
Sapporo City Transport
Sapporo Municipal Subway
Three lines covering central Sapporo:
- 🟢 Namboku Line (green) — Asabu → Odori → Susukino → Makomanai. Main north-south line.
- 🟠 Tozai Line (orange) — Miyanosawa → Odori → Shiroishi. East-west line.
- 🔵 Toho Line (blue) — Sakaemachi → Sapporo Station → Fukuzumi. Connects to JR Sapporo.
Sapporo Streetcar
Single loop line in central Sapporo. Useful for reaching Susukino nightlife area and Mount Moiwa Ropeway. Retro charm.
Hakodate Transport
Hakodate Streetcar
Two lines covering central Hakodate. Essential for reaching:
- Goryokaku (star-shaped fort)
- Motomachi (historic district)
- Hakodate Dock area

- Hokkaido Rail Pass — Unlimited JR Hokkaido for 5/7 days. Essential for multi-city trips. Includes Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
- Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass — 4 days of JR in the Sapporo/Noboribetsu area.
- Sapporo-Furano Area Pass — 4 days including Furano and Biei.
