Overview

Toshogu is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Built in 1617, it displays the wealth and power of the Edo period with elaborate gold leaf, intricate carvings, and vibrant colors. UNESCO World Heritage site.

Yomeimon Gate
Called “Twilight Gate” because you could gaze at it until dusk. Over 500 sculptures of dragons, lions, and mythical creatures. Japans most lavishly decorated gate.


Three Wise Monkeys
Famous “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” carving on the Sacred Stable. Represents the principle of not dwelling on negative things.

Sleeping Cat (Nemuri-neko)
Small carving above a gate, deceptively simple but famous. Said to represent peace – the cat sleeps because there is no danger.

Getting There
From Narita Airport (NRT)
Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Keisei Skyliner 🔵 from Terminal 1 or 2 to Keisei Ueno Station in approximately 45 minutes. From there, transfer to the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line 🟠 to Asakusa Station to catch the Tobu Limited Express, or walk to JR Ueno Station for the Shinkansen. Budget: The Keisei Main Line 🔵 offers lower fares but takes longer to reach Tokyo. Terminal 3 users must take a shuttle to Terminal 2 to access trains.
From Haneda Airport (HND)
Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Keikyu Line 🔴 from any terminal (T1, T2, T3) directly to Asakusa Station via through-service in approximately 35–45 minutes. At Asakusa, transfer to the Tobu Skytree Line for the Limited Express to Nikko. This route is efficient and minimizes complex transfers in central Tokyo.
From Major Stations
- From Asakusa Station (Recommended): Take the Tobu Limited Express (Spacia X, Spacia, or Revaty) directly to Tobu-Nikko Station in approximately 110 minutes. This is the most popular route for tourists not using a JR Pass.
- From Shinjuku Station: Take the direct JR/Tobu Limited Express “Nikko” or “Kinugawa” to Tobu-Nikko Station in approximately 120 minutes. Note that standard JR Passes may require a surcharge for the Tobu portion of the track.
- From Tokyo Station: Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen (Yamabiko) to Utsunomiya Station in approximately 50 minutes, then transfer to the JR Nikko Line 🟤 to JR Nikko Station (approximately 45 minutes). This is the best option for JR Pass holders.
Local Access
The shrine is located approximately 2 kilometers from both Tobu-Nikko and JR Nikko Stations. Recommended: Take the “World Heritage Sightseeing Bus” (Tobu Bus) from the station to the “Omotesando” or “Shinkyo” stop in approximately 10–15 minutes. Walking takes approximately 30–40 minutes and involves an uphill slope. IC cards (Suica, PASMO) are accepted on trains and local buses.
