Nara Park is home to over 1,000 free-roaming deer considered sacred messengers. The large park contains several of Naras major temples and shrines including the famous Todai-ji.

The Deer

Feeding the Deer

Deer crackers (shika senbei) sold for ¥200 at vendors throughout the park. The deer know to bow for food. Be prepared – they can be persistent once they know you have snacks.

Deer Behavior

Generally friendly but can bite or headbutt for food. Keep food hidden until ready. Some deer near Todai-ji are larger and more aggressive.

Getting There

From Kansai International Airport (KIX)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus directly to Kintetsu Nara Station or JR Nara Station in approximately 90 minutes. The bus serves both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and is the most convenient option for travelers with luggage. Rail Option (Mid-range): Take the JR Haruka Limited Express (white/blue) to Tennoji Station, then transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line 🟢 to Nara Station (approximately 85–95 minutes total).

From Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Airport Limousine Bus directly to Kintetsu Nara Station or JR Nara Station in approximately 60 minutes. This is significantly easier than rail options, which require multiple transfers involving the Osaka Monorail and Hankyu or subway lines.

From Major Stations

  • From Osaka-Namba Station: Take the Kintetsu Nara Line (Rapid Express – red/orange) directly to Kintetsu Nara Station (approximately 40 minutes). This is the fastest route from the Minami (Namba) district.
  • From Osaka Station (Umeda): Take the JR Yamatoji Line (Yamatoji Rapid Service – green) directly to JR Nara Station (approximately 50 minutes).
  • From Kyoto Station: Take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line (Express or Limited Express – orange/maroon) to Kintetsu Nara Station (approximately 35–45 minutes). Alternatively, the JR Nara Line (Miyakoji Rapid – brown) connects to JR Nara Station in approximately 45 minutes.

Local Access

Kintetsu Nara Station is the closest hub, located approximately a 5–10 minute walk from the park entrance and the main deer gathering spots. JR Nara Station is further away, requiring approximately a 20-minute walk along Sanjo-dori Street or a short ride on the Nara Kotsu Bus (yellow). IC cards like ICOCA, Suica, and PASMO are accepted on all trains and local buses.
