Getting There
From Hakodate Airport (HKD)
Recommended (Budget): Take the dedicated Airport Shuttle Bus from the arrival terminal directly to JR Hakodate Station in approximately 20 minutes. As the airport is located very close to the city center, this is the fastest and most convenient method. Taxis are also available for a mid-range cost and reach the station area in approximately 15–20 minutes.
From New Chitose Airport (CTS)
Recommended (Premium): Take the JR Rapid Airport train 🔵 from the airport terminal to Minami-Chitose Station (one stop, approximately 3 minutes). Transfer there to the JR Limited Express Hokuto 🔵 bound for Hakodate. The total journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. While New Chitose serves the wider Hokkaido region, travelers should note the significant travel time to Hakodate compared to flying directly into HKD.
From Major Stations
- From Sapporo Station: Take the JR Limited Express Hokuto 🔵 directly to Hakodate Station (approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes).
- From Tokyo Station: Take the JR Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hayabusa) to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station (approximately 4 hours). From there, transfer to the local “Hakodate Liner” train to reach JR Hakodate Station (approximately 15–20 minutes).
Local Access
JR Hakodate Station is the central hub for the area. The most convenient way to explore the city is the Hakodate City Tram, which connects the station to major tourist areas like Motomachi and Goryokaku Park. IC cards, including Kitaca, Suica, and PASMO, are accepted on the trams and most buses. The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway is accessible via a short walk or bus ride from the tram stops in the Jujigai area.
