Shinsekai (New World) is a retro entertainment district built in 1912. Once rough around the edges, its now a beloved area for kushikatsu (fried skewers) and nostalgic neon. The Tsutenkaku Tower dominates the skyline.

What to Do

Tsutenkaku Tower

The 103-meter tower offers city views. Touch the Billiken statue for luck. Built in 1956 to replace the original destroyed in WWII.

Retro Game Centers

Old-school arcades and pachinko parlors. Nostalgic 1950s-60s atmosphere preserved.

Tips

  • Combine with: Tennoji Zoo and Abeno Harukas nearby.
  • Kushikatsu rule: Never double-dip. Use cabbage to scoop more sauce if needed.

Getting There

From Kansai International Airport (KIX)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the 🔵 Nankai Line (Airport Express or Limited Express Rapi:t) from Terminal 1 directly to Shin-Imamiya Station in approximately 35–45 minutes. Shinsekai is a short walk from this station. Terminal 2 passengers must take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 to access the train station. Budget: The Nankai Airport Express offers a lower fare than the Rapi:t and takes only slightly longer. Premium: The 🔵 JR Haruka Limited Express connects to Tennoji Station, but the Nankai Line is generally more direct for the Shinsekai area.

From Itami Airport (ITM)

Recommended (Mid-range): Take the Osaka Monorail to Senri-Chuo Station, then transfer to the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line to Dobutsuen-mae Station. The total journey takes approximately 50–60 minutes. Alternatively, Airport Limousine Buses run to Tennoji Station (Abeno Harukas), which is a short taxi ride or walk from Shinsekai.

From Major Stations

  • From Shin-Osaka Station: Take the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line directly to Dobutsuen-mae Station (approximately 20–25 minutes). This is the most convenient route for Shinkansen travelers.
  • From Osaka/Umeda Station: Take the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line directly to Dobutsuen-mae Station (approximately 15 minutes).
  • From Kyoto Station: Take the JR Special Rapid Service to Osaka Station, then transfer to the 🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line to Dobutsuen-mae Station (approximately 45–55 minutes total).

Local Access

Shinsekai is served by three main stations. Ebisucho Station (Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line) is the closest to Tsutenkaku Tower (Exit 3). Dobutsuen-mae Station (🟠 Osaka Metro Midosuji Line) and Shin-Imamiya Station (JR Loop Line and 🔵 Nankai Line) provide easy access to the Janjan Yokocho alley entrance. IC cards such as ICOCA, Suica, and PASMO are accepted on all trains and subways in the region.
